Resuming its reign and its long win streak, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team began the 2010 season last Wednesday with a 7-0 sweep of the Liverpool Warriors.
In singles play, Mike Mintskovsky beat Brennan Kirsche 6-3, 6-2, while Nick Westergaard took out Joe Corcoran 6-0, 6-3 and Wilbert Geng had a 6-0, 6-1 rout over Chris Brais.
Danny Miron and Jimmy Miron led the doubles effort, beating Ian Swenson and Kelly Pare 6-3, 6-3. Alex Martin and Sam Badalian got past Steve Schneider and Mike Schneider 6-3, 6-4. Kunal Sangani and Scott Trobert topped Eamon Vaughn and Paul Taber 6-3, 6-1, with Mike Kaplan and Eric Rosenthal beating Luke Donigan and Anthony Taormina by those exact same scores.
F-M would sweep Henninger 7-0 two days later as Geng beat David Moore 6-0, 6-0. Westergaard and Mintskovsky also had straight-set wins as the four doubles entries lost just two games in eight sets of work.
Favored again in the OHSL Freedom division, Jamesville-DeWitt gave solid reasons for that confidence last Tuesday during a 5-0, season-opening sweep of the Chittenango Bears.
Erik Davis shut out Andres Corrales 6-0, 6-0, while Reed Tso rolled past Scott Mohr 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, the teams of Devan Ramachandran-Abraham Davis, Andrew Lee-Dave Zhang and Dave Rapp-Noah Kaplan each won in straight sets, too.
East Syracuse-Minoa would sweep Fowler 7-0 in its opening match, helped by the fact that four different matches were forfeited.
Tyler Underwood did take the court and needed three sets to beat Angel Menjivar 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Josh Nubia had a 6-1, 6-0 win over Varmun Kamara as, in doubles, John DeMarco and Derek Pontillo shut out Anwar Aziz and Ibrahaim Al Waeli 6-0, 6-0.
The Spartans then topped Mexico 5-2 on Thursday, mostly due to a singles sweep. That included Parker Stone beating Ian Brooks 6-3, 6-1 and Daryll Johnson earning a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dana Rowe.
Underwood topped Chris Harter 6-4, 6-3 and Pontillo needed a second-set tie-breaker to finish off Dan Fisher 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). The lone doubles point came when Brad Coulter and Andrew Barnell needed three sets to beat Tom Hartnett 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4.
