WG softball edges past Westhill, 3-2

Two neighbors, who just happened to have winning softball programs in separate leagues, met on a summer-like Thursday afternoon to begin their respective 2010campaigns.

West Genesee took on Westhill, and the two sides stayed close all the way to the end before the Wildcats gained a 3-2 victory over the Warriors.

With two strong pitchers in the circle — Tony Secreti for Westhill, Ashley Amidon for WG — runs would be precious.

Two things happened, though. First, the Wildcats got eight hits, to the Warriors’ three. Also, WG played error-free defense, while Westhill made two errors.

WG used a single run in the first inning to go in front, then got a needed cushion with Trish Andrews’ two-run single in the top of the fourth. Westhill countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Kelly Mascari earned an RBI, but Amidon pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

As the Warriors face a busy week that includes games against Fayetteville-Manlius, Phoenix and Cazenovia, WG returns to action Friday, at Oswego.
