City athletes reach state track meet

A pair of Corcoran athletes — Jalen Sanders on the boys side, Angelice Tearney on the girls side — earned trips to the state championship meet at Cornell University by getting second-place finishes at Monday’s snow-delayed Section III state qualifier at Manley Field House.

Only the top two of each individual event guaranteed themselves spots at Cornell. Sanders got there by clearing 6 feet 2 inches in the high jump with fewer misses than Old Forge’s Kevin Kress or Baldwinsville’s Brian Kane. Oneida’s Mike Rabbitt (6 feet 4 inches) finished first, with Nottingham’s Polich Anyek (6 feet) in fifth place.

The Cougars’ Xavier Canty just missed a state meet berth in the pole vault, finishing third as he cleared 11 feet 6 inches. In the 55-meter dash, Jerry Adams got even closer, finishing in 6.75 seconds to get third place, one-hundredth of a second behind Baldwinsville’s Rudy Sapp (6.74).

Sanders added a fifth-place triple jump of 41 feet 9 inches, while Nottingham’s Sean Adams took fifth in the long jump (20 feet 3 3/4 inches), an event where Rome Free Academy’s Anthony DeJean broke the sectional record with 23 feet 10 1/2 inches.

Corcoran’s 4×200 relay team of Jerry Adams, Antoine Tearney, Tyler Carter and Jordan Moore finished third in 1:35.72. Nottingham’s team of Anyek, Sean Adams, Delvon Sullivan and Patrick VonLueninck took sixth in 1:38.72.

Tearney took fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.50 seconds) as Chris Graham got seventh in the 600-meter run (1:27.13) and Moore was eighth in the 300-meter dash in 37.60 seconds.

Meanwhile, in the girls 55-meter dash, Angelice Tearney held off Jamesville-DeWitt’s Marae Tearney for that second spot, 7.62 seconds to 7.64, as RFA’s Jessica Razy won with a time of 7.54 seconds.

Elsewhere, Tearney, Imani Williams, Gwendolyn Thomas and Ashley Ruffin got to third place in the 4×200 relay in a time of 1:53.01, with Henninger’s quartet of Tirene Millhouse, Deja Thomas, Seanique Cannon and Symone Kennedy sixth in 1:54.96.

Millhouse was close to a state meet berth (just 0.14 seconds behind) as she took fourth in the 300-meter dash in 43.92 seconds. Thomas took fourth place in the 55 hurdles in 8.99 seconds and was eighth in the triple jump, going 32 feet 6 3/4 inches.Williams earned fifth place in the girls high jump, clearing 5 feet 1 inch.
