Already with the Section III Class B title in its possession, the Skaneateles girls indoor track and field team had every right to put less effort into Monday night’s Onondaga High School League Liberty/Patriot division meet at Manley Field House.
Still, the Lakers came up with 73 points and took third place. Westhill, with 91 points, took the top spot as Cazenovia (81 points) claimed the runner-up spot.
Victoria Sakal won a pair of close duels with Westhill’s Brenna Rainone in the sprints. In the 55-meter dash, Sakal prevailed, 7.70 seconds to 7.71, and in the 300-meter dash Sakal finished in 43.50 seconds as Rainone (43.58 seconds) again had the runner-up spot.
To cap off her effort, Sakal teamed with Cassie Berg, Grace Kelly and Eileen Ford to produce a victory in the 4×200 relay in a time of 1:52.16, more than a second ahead of runner-up Cazenovia.
Skaneateles would also win the 4×400 relay, with Berg, Emma Ford, Jane Gaffney and Amanda Gray combining to post a time of 4:20.69, leaving Cazenovia again in second, more than five seconds behind.
Eileen Ford, on her own, got second in the triple jump with 32 feet 1 inch and third in the 600-meter run (1:42.96). Emma Ford was fourth (15 feet 1/4 inch) in the long jump and fourth in the 300 behind Sakal.
Amanda Gray, Madeline Adams, Jane Gaffney and Danielle Mazzeo were third in the 4×200 relay in 10:58.33, as Adams also took fourth in the 3,000-meter run (12:01.53).
When the boys OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet took place on Wednesday, Skaneateles finished with 32 points, many of them from Tim Lewis.
In the high jump, Lewis and Tully’s Tom Haskins both cleared 6 feet, but Lewis did so with fewer misses, earning the 10 points for first place as Haskins settled for the runner-up spot.
Sean Cooper, with 8.28 seconds, was just behind Phoenix’s Sean McMonagle (8.18 seconds) and was second in the 55 hurdles. Calvin Davis took third in the 300 in 39.36 seconds and also was third (2:35.39) in the 1,000. Lewis also teamed with Colin Wentworth, Joe Duggan and Ian Smith to finish fifth in the 4×200 relay in 1:50.39.
