Before heading to the Section III Class A meet, The Vernon Verona Sherrill wrestling team would have two contests, its first action since the Jan. 23 Section III Dual Meet, and win them both. First, the Red Devils beat Adirondack 36-22 on its home mat by taking seven out of eight matches after losing the opener to clinch the CNY Wrestling League title. Dan Walts (130 pounds) got a forfeit, but Nate Walts (135 pounds) went out and beat Matt Fay in a 16-0 technical fall. The real streak began at 152 pounds, though, when Lane Frost blanked Nick Mills 9-0. In short order, Sean Ervin (160 pounds) beat Cody Buhler 6-3, Alex Mieczkowski (171 pounds) got past Cody Strobel 7-2 and Nick Mieczkowski (189 pounds) beat Dustin Eaton 9-3. Kyle Reader ended the run at 215 pounds when he pinned Jarred DeLaura in 41 seconds. Then VVS hosted Whitesboro and wrapped up yet another crown, ripping the Warriors 55-17 to complete an unbeaten (5-0) sprint through the Tri-Valley League. Nate Walts started at 140 by beating Dylan Tuttle 9-3, after which Aaron Prichard (145) turned a possible deficit into a pin of Jeff Evanciew in 2:42 and Frost pinned Hunter Brown late in the second period. Alex Mieczkowski, ignoring the fact that he would have knee surgery within five days, went out at 171 and pinned Matt Sowers midway through the third period, while Nick Mieczkowski (189) finished off Joe Sullivan in 2:34. Kyle Reader (215) took 3:15 to pin Jim Conlan. Later in the meet, Kasey Proper (103) took a forfeit, John Hudson (112) romped past Rob DiDomenico 17-5. Joe Tiller, at 125, got a third-period pin over Pat Morgan and Dan Walts closed things out with a 30-second pin of Andy Waldron. Oneida, meanwhile, had a meet on Wednesday against Cortland and pulled out a 34-33 victory over the Purple Tigers. The Indians won despite having to forfeit four different matches, atoning somewhat by picking up two of them as Connor Russ (103) and Nick Hopkins (119) didn’t have to wrestle. Needing success elsewhere, Oneida got it when Lon Palmer (152) pinned Jesse Towers in 1:56 and Steve Ellsworth (160) finished off Lucas Bush in 1:48. At 140, Connor Lomonaco earned a third-period pin over Anthony Stento as Matt Fisher, at 135, beat Ryan Webber 8-5. Jake Starozak (171) lost to Garret Morse 5-2.
