The Liverpool boys swim ran straight into a talented Mexico squad last Tuesday night and took a 109-76 loss to the Tigers.
Only once did the Warriors get an individual title — in the 100 butterfly, where Cory Spado put together a time of 56.60 seconds to beat the field.
Mexico had three different swimmers win two events apiece, including Mike Hartwell (200 individual medley, 100 freestyle), Zach Earl (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Logan Killian (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke). Hartwell would tear through the 100 freestyle in 49.92 seconds and help the Tigers take the 400 freestyle relay in 3:27.54.
Three nights later, the Warriors hosted Oswego and had a far different result, rolling to a 100-82 victory over the Buccaneers.
Joe Hens and Drew Henry had lots of early success. They teamed with Kenny Byers and Jake Burns to prevail in the 200 medley relay (1:50.95), then went on to individual titles — Hens in the 100 butterfly (1:01.09), Henry in the 200 individual medley (2:22.88).
Later in the meet, Alex Perfitt earned another individual title, in the 100 backstroke (1:02.40), and the team of Nick Hens, Shane Donovan, Alex Coleman-Gridley and Phil MacLeod earned a win in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:38.44.
By winning the team event, Liverpool overcame the fact that Oswego’s Drake Becksted set a pool record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.50 seconds. Becksted also tore through the 100 freestyle in 48.16 seconds.
Liverpool (8-2, 7-1 league) visits Rome Free Academy Thursday night to close the regular season, with the Feb. 10-13 Section III championships at Nottingham looming.
