Before local competitions resumed, both the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool indoor track and field teams cleaned up with victories during last Saturday’s Southern Tier Invitational at Cornell University’s Barton Hall, annual site of the state championships each March.
Jasmine Thompson had a big performance. First, she tore to victory in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.71 seconds, with Katie Osborne sixth in 9.36 seconds.
Thompson would also win the long jump, going 16 feet 10 1/4 inches, and finished second in the high jump as she cleared 5 feet 2 inches, while Osborne tied for ninth.
Taylor Wendler gave the Northstars a victory in the 1,500-meter run, her time of 4:46.62 nearly 10 seconds clear of Sweet Home’s Katie Niblock.
CNS also had Maria Lamontagne (3:06.89) and Marissa Colburn (3:09.62) take third and fifth, respectively, in the 1,000-meter run. Nicole Campagna finished sixth in the 600-meter run (1:44.88) as the Northstars had an eighth-place time of 4:24.97 in the 4×800 relay. Casey Wilmer was fourth in the shot put (33 feet 8 3/4 inches), with Valerie Langevin seventh.
Liverpool, on the track, had its big moment in the 4×800 relay, where it beat the field of 25 other entries. The Warriors had a time of 10:06.06, just ahead of runner-up Clarence (10:08.41), with CNS taking fifth place in 10:20.99.
Lesley Bowers was part of that relay and, on her own, took third place in the 3,000-meter event in 10:48.47, with teammate Chelsea Attaway in 10th place. Rachel Putman took sixth in the 1,500 (5:08.71) behind Wendler.
The Warriors were seventh (1:57.11) in the 4×200 relay. Attaway was sixth (8 feet 6 inches) in the pole vault and Armani Moore took seventh in the high jump.
On the boys side, Liverpool teammates Zavon Watkins and Chris Clemons went 1-2 in the 1,000, Watkins winning in a time of 2:37.76 and Clemons taking second in 2:38 flat. They also helped the Warriors dominate the 4×800 relay, winning in 8:08.09, more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place Shaker.
Familiar rivals clashed in the mile, and Liverpool’s Colin Savage beat CNS’s Chris Buchanan as Savage posted a time of 4:24.46 and Buchanan (4:26.90) settled for the runner-up spot. The Warriors’ Alex Wilke earned ninth place.
In field events, yet another Liverpool-CNS showdown went the Warriors’ way in the shot put, where Jason Osborne threw it 47 feet 9 3/4 inches, beating the Northstars’ Jared Thomson, who was second with 46 feet 11 3/4 inches. Osborne was also 11th in the weight throw.
Liverpool’s Tony Shuler got fifth place in the triple jump (41 feet 4 1/2 inches), while Joe Spernyak was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.31 seconds). CNS’s Dillon McKee and Brendan Ryan were ninth and 11th, respectively, in the pole vault.
