Both the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool wrestling teams stayed quite active in the wake of their sensational duel on Dec. 23.
CNS resumed action in last Tuesday’s Teike-Bernabi Tournament at Spencerport, west of Rochester, where it picked up 47 points to tie for 15th place in the field of 20, well back of Shenendehowa’s winning total of 204 points.
Three days later, the Northstars began 2010 on the best note possible, going undefeated in five matches and taking the Camden Dual Meet.
Early on, CNS bashed Port Byron 66-15 and host Camden 60-23, then moved ahead to beat Chittenango 51-26 and Cortland 65-11. As this was going on, Oneida was also winning all four of its matches.
So it came down to the Northstars against the Indians — and once again, CNS proved too much, taking out Oneida 45-28 to complete its day-long sweep and get the first-place trophy.In the Warriors’ case, this meant going to the Kenneth Haines Memorial Tournament at SUNY-Oswego’s Laker Hall, where it took ninth place in a tough 15-team field with 74 points. Fulton (315 points) edged Spencerport (294 points) for the top spot.
Derek Eason nearly won the 145-pound division. Eason beat Dave Czajkowski (Cato-Meridian) 3-0, then pinned both Austin Woodworth (Hannibal) and Marcus Earl (Fulton) to reach the finals.
In the championship match, Eason squared off with Whitney Point’s Broc Clark. They stayed close all the way through but Clark edged Eason 7-5 for the title.
Nate Hathaway, 3-2 at 112 pounds, won fifth place by topping teammate Casey Guilfoil 6-3 as Guilfoil took sixth and Mike Reed (215 pounds) also finished sixth. Tyler Eason was seventh at 119 pounds, with Joe Pizzuto seventh at 171 pounds.
On Wednesday night, as Liverpool confronts Corcoran, CNS duels with Baldwinsville as first place in the CNY Counties League National division is on the line. The Northstars then go to Saturday’s Victor Dual Meet near Rochester.
