By the tiniest margin possible — a single point — the Liverpool girls indoor track and field team beat Cicero-North Syracuse in the Dec. 19 CNY Indoor Track Association Christmas Relays, held at Hamilton College.
The Warriors finished with 76 points, to the Northstars’ total of 75. Jamesville-DeWitt was strong, too, taking third place with 66 points.
In such a close contest, the difference could be as minute as what took place in the high jump. Liverpool (Meagan Turner, Megan Earle) and CNS (Jasmine Thompson, Katie Osborne) both cleared 9 feet 8 inches, but the Warriors did so with fewer misses, and took first place with 10 points to the Northstars’ eight.
Chelsea Attaway and Trina Bills teamed up to win the 800-meter relay in 5:17.69. Liverpool got to second in the pole vault, where Attaway cleared 8 feet, while Hannah Anthes and Shae Shenandoah got second (1:01.06) in the 200-meter dash.
Nikki Carfi and Megan Earle teamed for second place in the 55-meter hurdles in 20.94 seconds. The Warriors were third in the triple jump (56 feet 4 1/2 inches) and long jump (27 feet 3/4 inch) and fourth in the shot put and 3,000-meter run.
CNS won the shot put as Valerie Langevin and Casey Wilmer (second and third, respectively, among individuals) had combined tosses of 65 feet 9 1/2 inches. In the 600-meter run, Maria Lamontagne (second) and Marissa Colburn (third) earned a victory in 6:29.98.
Taylor Wendler and Nicole Watterud teamed to win the 3,000-meter relay, their times adding up to 22:18.33, while Nicole Campagna and Chelsea Davidson earned victory in the 600-meter run in 3:35.02, ahead of runner-up Liverpool (3:37.58), even though Bills took the individual title in 1:44.60.
The Northstars’ tandem of Sarah Shannon and Dana Rinaldi ran to second in the 1,500-meter relay (10:59.89), while CNS also was fourth in the 800 and 400 relays.
Over in the boys Christmas Relays, Liverpool also edged CNS by a point, 43-42, though that only meant fifth and sixth place, respectively. Baldwinsville took the top spot, earning 64 points.
Liverpool’s lone win came in the 55-meter hurdles, where Joe Spernyak won among individuals in 8.50 seconds, edging out West Genesee’s Matt Ulrich (8.51 seconds). Spernyak and Keewan Rondinello combined to win in 17.82 seconds.
In the shot put, the Warriors’ tandem of Jason Osborne and Vince Tesoriero finished second, with total tosses of 84 feet 7 inches, Tony Shuler and Justin McGriff were second in the triple jump, going 75 feet 3 1/2 inches between them.
Zavon Watkins and Anthony Romano were third in the 1,000-meter run (5:48.77), while Liverpool was fifth in the 800-meter run and got a series of sixth-place efforts, too.
For CNS, Brendan Ryan and Dillon McKee combined to clear 20 feet 6 inches and win the pole vault, the Northstars’ only title.
Jared Thomson and Tawone Williams were third (83 feet 3 inches) in the shot put as Chris Buchanan won the individual mile in 4:38.15 and teamed with Alan Munoz to finish third. Ken Ryan and Eric Hart were third (21:26.21) in the 3,200-meter relay.
