West Genesee’s wrestling team was close to perfect in last Wednesday’s meet against Fayetteville-Manlius, claiming all but one match in a 58-3 rout of the Hornets.
Jason Heggelke, at 125 pounds, began the fun by taking 54 seconds to pin Tom Quinlan, and Jason Fitch (130 pounds) pinned Joe Billington in 1:59.
In a closer match at 135 pounds, Jon Fetterolf held off Connor Wingate 6-4, while Nick Longo blanked Johnny Hajduk 2-0 at 140 pounds. Erik Krohl (145 pounds) proved more convincing in an 11-1 win over Tyler Neveldine.
The pins resumed at 152 pounds with Evan Stefano, who took just 1:02 to finish off Angelo Pavone. Heitham Wady (160 pounds) won when Mike Mannion suffered an injury and could not continue.
At 171 pounds, Nick Marco earned his fall over Jordan Kalil with nine seconds left in their match, before Matt Nichols (189 pounds) earned a 58-second pin over Donny VanTassel.
After the lone defeat at 215 pounds (Joe Clancy fell to Mick Bryan 6-2), Dirk Logan showed up at 103 pounds and shut out Jacob Norton 4-0. Ian Coolican (112 pounds) gained his pin over Tim Byrnes at the end of the first period and Connor Grome (119 pounds) closed the meet with a 4-1 decision over Josh Scalzetti.
As this went on, Jordan-Elbridge met Solvay and put together a 51-23 victory over the Bearcats in OHSL Liberty division action.
It proved close for a while — at least until the Eagles earned forfeits in each of the last four matches from 103 to 125 pounds as Mitch Alpha, Trevor Pettitt, Mike Nguyen and Collin Ennulat didn’t have to wrestle.
Joe Mills, at 130 pounds, began the meet for J-E by pinning Cody McCarthy in 45 seconds. After a forfeit to Kalys Zhumakadyruulu (135 pounds), Solvay got on the board at 140 pounds when Mitch Anthony earned a third-period technical fall over Mitch Cooper.
Mike Warne, at 171 pounds, earned his pin over Ryan Hubbs in 52 seconds, while Conor Cosgrove (189 pounds) and Shawn Abraham (215 pounds) took forfeits. In a 285-pound exhibition, J-E’s William Tyrell pinned Kevin Fox midway through the second period.
A night earlier, Marcellus ran into powerhouse Phoenix and could not win a match from the Firebirds.
Two of the matches proved close, though. At 119 pounds, Rich Ghezzi battled Nate Dietz to the last seconds, but lost 4-3. Andrew Eberle had the same chance, at 135 pounds, only to take a 4-2 defeat to Ben Gouchie.
