Senior citizens in the town of Clay may soon get their own residential zone.
The town is considering a new local law to amend their zoning code to include a new zone entitled R-SR Senior Residence District to accommodate people age 62 or older with particular living needs. At its Dec. 7 meeting, the Clay Town Board approved scheduling a public hearing on the proposal.
“What we’re attempting to do here is create a zoning district that will incorporate not only zoning for seniors but also limited retail and commercial to reinforce the needs of that population,” said Councilor Naomi Bray.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Clay resident Dave Arthur.
A public hearing on the proposed change will be held at 7:35 p.m. Jan. 4 at the town board’s regular meeting. At that time town representatives will explain the proposed uses under the new zone and hear public comments on the proposal.
In other business:
* The board approved an application for a utility substation permit at 5232 Caughdenoy Road. The permit, which was requested by Verizon Wireless and James and Linda Baker, will allow Verizon to construct a 140 foot telecommunication pole at the site.
*The town will hold a public hearing at 7:44 p.m. Jan. 4 to inform the public of its intentions to apply for a Brownfield Opportunity Area grant from the New York Department of State. The grant would provide up to $140,000 for improvement at the Maider Road/Three Rivers site. A copy of the grant application is on file at the town clerk’s office as well as the North Syracuse Public Library. Deputy Supervisor Robert Edick also said the town would try to post it to its Web site, townofclay.org.
