Now the work for the Skaneateles boys soccer team involves hanging on to the top spot in the OHSL Liberty division. Alone in first place before Friday’s home game against Westhill, everything changed the moment the final whistle blew and the Warriors had stunned the Lakers 1-0. Now Skaneateles shares first place with Marcellus, each with 7-1-1 league marks (though the Lakers have the tie-breaker due to that 3-1 win on Oct. 1). Westhill is one game back at 6-2-1, and a new factor thanks to its big road win. Given the game’s tempo, it seemed inevitable that Skaneateles would take over against Westhill, just as it did in their first meeting on Sept. 15, which featured three goals scored off Kelly Donigan’s throw-ins. What the Lakers hadn’t counted on, though, was Westhill goalkeeper Ryan Boyle having the best day of his varsity career, making a series of great stops and single-handedly keeping the game 0-0 going into the second half. In the 50th minute, Westhill got a rare attack — and Andrew McBride, off a feed from Anthony Scaravillo, poked a shot past Jake Bird into the net. That would hold up the rest of the way, for even though the Skaneateles attacks picked up, Boyle kept working his magic, finishing with 18 saves for the shutout. Before all this, the Lakers went to Earl Hadley Stadium last Tuesday night and toyed with the Bearcats in a 4-0 shutout. Quickly, Skaneateles raced out to a 3-0 lead by halftime, then kept up the pressure behind a balanced attack that produced 20 shots. Four different players — A.J. Richichi, Kevin Rice, Zach Brownlee and Kyle Baier — produced the four Laker goals. Kelly Donigan had two assists, again using his trusty throw-ins to set up goals, while Dan Zollner also got an assist. Fuming at the Westhill loss, Skaneateles took it out Saturday on Homer in a 5-1 romp, racing to a 3-0 halftime lead to quell any possible doubts about its game. Jeff Baldetti returned to form, scoring twice and adding an assist, while Donigan had one goal and one assist. Baier and Bryan Stokes-Cawley also converted, with Richichi and Jeff Higman earning assists. Skaneateles will be favored in each of its remaining three regular-season games, including Tuesday’s visit to Cazenovia, its only action this week.
