A lot of people figured that the Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt girls soccer teams would engage in a fun, fast-paced affair when the rivals met Friday night at Alibrandi Stadium. What no one could expect was just how much the Brothers would dominate against the 10-1 Red Rams in a 5-0 blowout. When they had first met on Sept. 14 at J-D, the Red Rams had overwhelmed CBA’s defense in a 6-3 victory, yet another reminder of how the Rams had taken over the OHSL Freedom division — or so it seemed at the time. Since then, as CBA had regrouped, the Rams had taken its first loss of the season to Cortland on Sept. 29, though even that was a close 2-1 decision. It gave absolutely no hint of what was to happen at Alibrandi. From the moment the game kicked off, the Brothers attacked hard, using its experience on the fast Alibrandi turf to push into J-D’s end often. Twice, those pushes led to goals in the first 10 minutes, as Caitlin McConnell and Alexis Koval pushed shots past Sarah Gianni. Try as it could, the Rams had no answer, managing just four shots all game while its own Gianni, was under siege, forced to make 16 saves. It remained 2-0 until the second half, when Koval offered the finishing touches on a three-goal hat trick by scoring two more times, while McConnell added two assists and Taylor Gait picked up the other goal, plus an assist. Prior to this latest meeting, J-D and CBA both earned wins, building momentum and giving no hint of the one-sided nature of their eventual meeting. J-D went up to Fulton last Monday and completed a regular-season sweep of the Red Raiders in a 4-0 shutout. Tessa Devereaux, fairly quiet in recent games, returned to form by scoring twice, as Tara Prosak picked up a pair of assists. Emily Elbers and Tori Nies each got goals, too. Sarah Gianni stopped all six shots she faced. Meanwhile, the CBA boys team ended its week with a big test against two-time defending Class AA champion Baldwinsville, which ended in a 3-2 loss to the Bees. It was tied, 1-1, at halftime, but despite goals from Sars Bowman and Matt Oot and Pat Wiese earning two assists, B’ville still finished in front as Jon Goodridge, Anthony Vecchio and Adam Lauko scored on the Bees’ behalf. Prior to that, the Brothers ripped Homer 5-1 last Tuesday night as it tripped up the Trojans with four unanswered goals in the first half. Wiese scored twice, with Bowman, Emmanuel Collins and Jack Johnston also converting. Connor Letcher and Joe Civello each had two assists, with Brian Schwab also getting an assist.
