Most likely, the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title was at stake on Saturday when the Skaneateles girls tennis team squared off against Christian Brothers Academy.
And with a full sweep of the doubles matches, the Lakers edged past the Brothers, 4-3, to improve its record to 7-0 and hand CBA its first defeat of the season.
Skaneateles watched as Amitra Deol, Elizabeth Lane and Hillary Fenner all lost in singles. Olivia Messineo beat Deol 7-5, 6-0, with Colleen Cavanaugh fighting past Fenner 6-4, 7-5 and Shlipa Kamani handling Lane 6-2, 6-4.
To begin the rally, Megan Holleran and Katherine Hill, unbeaten in 2009, needed straight sets to work past Julie Thomson-Basha and Emily Norkett 6-4, 7-5.
From there, Casey VanSlyke and Kathryn Magee beat Rebecca Scullin and Shannon Fitch 7-6, 7-5, with Ryan Merle and Sidney Lawson dominating Laura Bulman and Lauren Mastroeni in a 6-1, 6-3 sweep.
So it all rode on fourth doubles. The Lakers’ tandem of Dani Alderman and Katharina Kulik lost the first set to Taylor Procopio and Sarah Kitts, but made a stirring comeback and won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the team crown.
Fresh off winning its division at the Sept. 26 Central New York Invitational, the Lakers met Bishop Grimes last Wednesday, and did not lose a set in a 7-0 romp over the Cobras.
Lane and Fenner won singles matches over, respectively, Sarah Oberton and Amelia Heisleman by equal 6-0, 6-1 scores. Deol beat Nicole DeLello 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Holleran and Hill beat Michelle Godlewski and Mackenzie Thomson 6-1, 6-0. Lawson and VanSlyke put together a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cady Kalemba and Missy Azzolino. Elsewhere, Chelsea White and Kulik ripped Maria King and Alexis Kuberski 6-3, 6-0, with Magee and Alderman getting past Carlie Benbenek 6-0, 6-3.
