Surging with momentum from its win over Jamesville-DeWitt earlier in the week, the Chittenango girls tennis team kept up the great work in two trips to Cortland.
First, the Bears went to Cortland High School on Friday and prevailed by a 5-2 margin over the Purple Tigers with a long series of comebacks.
Every doubles match was a battle. Erin and Megan McPeak rallied to beat Danielle Payne and Maggie Reagan 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, with Elisabeth Posthill and Kaleigh Koegel doing the same in a 6-7 (9-7), 6-0, 6-3 win over Nadia Skotsen and Marlyss Darrow.
Rose Thresh and Katie Natke also fell behind — and also won, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 over Irena Priadoun and Nadia Shevchuk. Even in a straight-set match, Tanya Cziesler and Brandyn McDermott had to work to beat Monica Mo and Naomi Chappell 6-4, 6-4.
In singles, Ami Petosa and Sierra Sleight both lost in straight sets, but Shelby Bogle beat Heather Sherwood 6-4, 6-4 for another point.
Not stopping there, Chittenango went on to win its division at Saturday’s CNY Girls Tennis Invitational at SUNY-Cortland, again beating Cortland, 39 points to 33, with Homer (23 points) and Westhill (17 points) further back.
Bogle won in second singles, beating Homer’s Sarah Dart 6-3, 7-6 in the finals. Sleight was second in third singles, while in doubles the Petosa sisters, along with McDermott and Cziesler, each won their divisions in one-sided form. Posthill and Koegel finished second in the third doubles division.
If the weather holds, Chittenango will have matches this week against Fowler, Mexico and East Syracuse-Minoa.
