While continuing to build its epic win streak, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team also made a big neighborhood conquest. Hosting Saturday’s Central New York Tennis Invitational, the Hornets won with 45 points, beating Christian Brothers Academy (31 points), Jamesville-DeWitt (23 points) and Manlius-Pebble Hill (11 points) for that top spot. In all, F-M took five of the seven divisions. Carly Romano prevailed in second singles, beating Anna Purcell (MPH) 6-0, 6-3, while Allison Vizgaitis took out CBA’s Colleen Cavanaugh 6-1, 6-2 in third singles. Over in second doubles, Olivia Calancie and Lauren Schaefer worked past teammates Caitlin Welker and Laura Thomson 6-3, 6-1. In third doubles, Rhiannon Iorio and Shelby Smith handled Rebecca Scullin and Shannon Fitch (CBA) 6-4, 6-3, while Ellen Choi and Kelsey Gordon won fourth doubles by taking out J-D’s tandem of Lauren Swan and Nina Williams 6-1, 6-2. Only twice did others break through. In first singles, Sienna Susko went to three sets, but lost to CBA’s Olivia Messineo 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, while Katie Muller and Maria Mintskovsky had a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to the Brothers’ duo of Juile Thomson-Basha and Emily Norkett in the first doubles championship. All this came a day after the Hornets shut out Central Square 7-0, a match where Susko and Vizgaitis did not drop a game and Romano beat Madison Perkins 6-0, 6-2. Each of the doubles matches were straight-set sweeps, too, with Iorio-Smith and Welker-Thomson pitching their own 6-0, 6-0 shutouts.
