Getting together in field hockey for the first of two autumn clashes, rivals Vernon Verona Sherrill and Oneida battled on Thursday afternoon, with the visiting Red Devils toppling the Indians in a 5-1 romp.
For much of the afternoon, the Red Devils stayed on the offensive against the Indians, getting a host of scoring opportunities and converting them.
Ashley Palmer led VVS with a pair of goals. Jenna Dunne, Emily Fewer and Alexis Albro picked up one goal apiece, while Kristen Johnson and Liz Bush earned assists.
Oneida got on the board once, Kissandra Blasier earning the goal, as Taylor Youngkrans finished with nine saves.
Prior to meeting each other, VVS and Oneida got involved in separate contests last Monday, with separate results as the Red Devils whipped Sherburne-Earlville 5-0 and the Indians took a 3-0 loss to Whitesboro.
VVS was playing in the consolation game of S-E’s tournament, this after a loss to Greene in the opening round, and were burning for some atonement.
It came in the form of a deep, balanced attack that kept the Marauders on its heels all game long. Danielle Brindisi scored twice, with Ashley Palmer, Dominique Coy and Jenna Dunne also converting. Palmer joined Jane Vanderhoof, Mary Schilling and Alexis Albro in the assist column.
As this was going on, Oneida ran into Whitesboro and saw Allie Webb, Ari Giruzzi and Ashley Goodman put up goals on the Warriors’ behalf.
The Red Devils made it back-to-back wins on Tuesday, battling past New Hartford 1-0.
Dunne scored, unassisted, in the first half, and that was all VVS would need. Tracee Scheibel led a defense that constantly took the ball away from New Hartford. The Spartans would have just four shots all afternoon.
In next week’s action, VVS hosts Clinton and gets a big showdown Thursday against Camden. Oneida also plays Clinton, in between games against Holland Patent and Canastota.
