With a stirring late comeback, the Baldwinsville girls swim team gave itself the best possible start to its 2009 season, beating Liverpool 51-43 last Wednesday night at the Baker High School pool.
Carly Gummer gave the Bees its early highlights. Gummer teamed with Kaitlyn Martin, Amy Sidorakis and Charis Parker to win the 200 medley relay (2:02.02), then worked on her own to swim the 50 freestyle in 26.02 seconds.
But with Renee Stromski and Madison Sestak each winning twice, Liverpool went out in front, requiring the Bees to win each of the last four events — which it did.
The rally began in the 200 freestyle relay, where Gummer and Parker returned to team with Elena Margrey and Megan Eubank for a winning time of 1:48.11.
Sidorakis returned in the 100 backstroke, winning that event in 1:07.85, and Kelly Noll kept up the win streak when she claimed first in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:15.79.
So it all rode on the last race, the 400 freestyle relay. And B’ville won it as Eubank, Parker, Margrey and Gummer finished in 4:00.81.
This sets up the Bees for next Wednesday’s meet against Fayetteville-Manlius at Nottingham High School, as B’ville tries to end the Hornets’ 17-meet win streak.
