Marcellus resident and Democratic Committee Chair Robert Dingman will run for town supervisor in the 2009 town elections.
The party had endorsed Nancy Bunn as its candidate for supervisor at the July caucus, but Bunn had said she had not decided whether she would run.
After more than 50 years of involvment in politics, Dingman, 76, decided to make his first run for public office, citing a lack of direction on the current town board.
Dingman said he feels the board missed opportunities with renovating town hall, and that his experience as a meat and poultry inspector for New York State, where he was required to study and approve blueprints for plants, and in renovating homes would help him find the right solution to the current problems with town hall.
He’s also in touch with those residents who don’t want to see their taxes skyrocket, as he and his wife, Anne, are retired and on a fixed income, Dingman pointed out.
Dingman said he would like to see growth in the town, but not necessarily large-scale industrial, and supports the Marcellus Fire Department owning the fire station.
“If they [the town board] can’t take care of the town hall they’ve got, how are they going to take care of the fire department?” Dingman said. He would support a long-term lease that would require ownership to be transferred to the town should the fire department want to sell the building.
“I enjoy Marcellus and I want to see it maintained without costing us a small fortune,” he added.
Also running on the Democratic ticket in Marcellus is Kevin O’Hara and Bill Burnett, both for town councilor, and Chris Howlett for highway superintendent.
