Willis nearly captures state pole vault title

Jeff Willis already had enjoyed a memorable spring with the Canastota boys track and field team, becoming the new Section III record-holder in the pole vault.

Now Willis chased a bigger prize during last Friday’s state championship meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.

A full Division II field soon whittled down to Willis and Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s Josh Glick, and both would finish with clearance of 14 feet, short of the sectional mark Willis set a month ago.

However, because Glick had fewer misses, he finished in first, while Willis settled for the second-place medal. Overall, Willis and Glick tied for seventh as Nick Gerardi (Queensbury) cleared 15 feet for the top spot.

Over in the girls 3,000-meter run on the same night, Allison Lasnicki would, in a field of 31, take 18th overall in a time of 10 minutes, 25.18 seconds. That put her eighth in Division II, where Genna Hartung (Seton Catholic) won in 9:57.96.
