As if a remarkable win over Westhill in the Section III Class C playoffs wasn’t enough, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team added more drama two days later. The Lakers rallied Saturday to stun no. 3 seed Marcellus by that same 11-10 margin by which it beat Westhill in the Class C semifinals at West Genesee High School, again scoring in the final seconds of regulation to advance. And yes, this was the same Marcellus team, with much of the same players, against whom Skaneateles came from behind to beat 12-11 in the 2008 sectional title game. Somehow, the same thing happened again — with the same player, Maddy Morrissey, at the heart of the comeback. Down 5-3 late in the first half, Skaneateles got even with back-to-back goals from Morrissey and Aly Davis in the last minute of the half, then pulled ahead 7-5 early in the second half. Marcellus turned it around, though, blanking Skaneateles for nearly 12 minutes as Nora Barry, who led the Mustangs with five goals, scored three times in a 5-0 Mustang run. When Stephanie O’Rourke converted with 9:57 to play, the Lakers trailed, 10-7, and head coach Bridget Marquardt called a time-out, reminding her players that the exact same thing happened in the 2008 final — and that Skaneateles had won. Fueled by that memory, the Lakers rallied again. Thanks to goals by Carly and Aly Davis less than 90 seconds apart, the margin fell to 10-9, and Lindsay Angelillo tied it with an aggressive move and goal with 4:08 to play. As regulation time wound down, Morrissey picked up a loose ball at midfield and charged 50 yards toward the Mustangs’ net. Not hesitating, she moved just to the left of the point and ripped a shot past Marcellus goalie Renee Pouillot with 11 seconds to play. Marcellus still had just enough time to try a tying shot, but as with Westhill, Mullen turned away Kate Gosson’s chance, and the Lakers were in the finals. That will come Tuesday night, at SUNY-Cortland, where the Lakers meet top seed Carthage, who survived a furious Cazenovia rally to win 16-14 in the other semifinal. If it wins, Skaneateles will have claimed seven consecutive sectional titles – and will have beaten each of the top three seeds in the Class C playoffs to pull it off.
