Making it a sweep with their female counterparts, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys track and field team withstood stiff challenges from Rome Free Academy and Corcoran to win the CNY Counties League American division championship Thursday at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
With 156 points, the Hornets beat RFA, who got second with 139 points, and Corcoran, who was third with 115 points.
As usual, F-M piled up points in distance running. John Cico won twice, taking the mile in 4:40.11 as Joe Hartnett (4:43.80) and Ben Thomas (4:46.29) completed a 1-2-3 sweep. Much the same thing happened in the 3,200-meter run, where Cico won in 10:09.34, with Andrew Veilleux (10:28.66) second and Thomas third in 10:31.75.
Alex Hatz had a lighter workload, but he tore through 800 meters in 1:56.26, with Hartnett sixth, and he also took second in the 400-meter dash in 50.99 seconds.
In the 4×400 relay, Hatz teamed with Veilleux, Ben Sargrad and Tim Duett to win the 4×800 relay in 8:28.95, and he also helped Mike Matonse, Jordan Foster and Gottsch Kramer for third (3:40.31) in the 4×400.
Matonse, on his own, took second in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.64 seconds, just behind Oswego’s Ed Kramer (59.37 seconds), with Kramer fourth in 1:03.21.
Chris Ruggeri gave F-M another win in the pentathlon, earning 2,601 points for the five events, far better than anyone in either CNYCL division. Owen Strong needed 10:29.60 for a victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
F-M got 18 points out of the 200-meter dash, as Ryan Jones finished second (23.99 seconds), J.R. Sage third (24.29 seconds) and Brandon Kidd fourth in 24.44 seconds. Jones also got fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.87 seconds and sixth in the triple jump, with Sage and Kidd fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump.
Karl Thomson earned third place in the discus with a throw of 137 feet 5 inches and also took fourth (45 feet 5 3/4 inches) in the shot put. Tyler Rhinehart cleared 10 feet 6 inches for fifth place in the pole vault as Ian Byrnes finished sixth in the pole vault.
