While the Fayetteville-Manlius girls track and field team still sets the pace in the CNY Counties League American division, the boys Hornets now sit in second place.
This came due to last Wednesday’s meet at Corcoran, where the F-M girls beat the Cougars 82-59, but the boys fell to Corcoran 87.5-57.5.
Leading on the girls side, Jess Marini broke the one-minute mark in the 400-meter dash, winning in 59.8 seconds, and added a quick time of 1:05.3 in the 400-meter hurdles. She also teamed with Courtney Chapman, Molly Malone and Natalie Alibrandi to take the 4×400 relay in 4:10.3.
Malone won the 800-meter run in 2:17.6, as Gennie Ariotti prevailed at 1,500 meters (5:08) and Kristen Buchan won the 3,000 in 12:14. In the 4×800 relay, Buchan, Hannah Luber, Mackenzie Carter and Colleen Mulvihill won in 10:47.2.
Jhoville Pommels threw the shot put 31 feet 3 inches to win that event as Amanda Saunders and Kelly Muller both cleared 6 feet 6 inches in the pole vault. Isabell Carapella broke Corcoran’s domination of the sprints, tying the Cougars’ Gwen Thomas as they both finished the 100 high hurdles in 17.6 seconds.
F-M’s boys had plenty of great moments, despite the team defeat. Pushed by Trenton Sparks, who finished in 1:57.8, Alex Hatz tore through the 800-meter run in 1:53.8, setting a new F-M school record. Sparks broke the Corcoran school record in the same event.
Hatz helped Ben Sargrad, John Cico and Joe Hartnett win the 4×800 relay in 8:48. Cico, on his own, won the mile in 4:47.3, edging out Owen Strong (4:48.3), who did take the 3,200-meter run in 10:25.7.
Corcoran won most of the sprints and field events, but Karl Thomson did sweep the throwing events as he tossed the discus 123 feet 8 inches and the shot put 45 feet 4 inches.
Making up for this in a hurry, the boys Hornets went to Chittenango two days later and won the Coaches Association meet with 107.5 points, holding off Watertown (97.5 points) for that top spot.
In the marquee event, the Fleet Feet Mile, Hatz dueled with Marcellus star Chris Stogsdill, and Hatz had to settled for second place, in 4:10.80, as Stogsdill won in 4:07.93. In the unseeded mile event, Ben Thomas won in 4:58.82.
Cico worked his way to victory in the 3,200-meter run in 10:03.48 with his teammate, Andrew Veilleux, finishing third in 10:16.53.
Owen Strong dominated the 3,000-meter steeplechase, his time of 10:16.55 beating the field by nearly 16 seconds. Matonse was second in the 400 hurdles (1:02.18), with Chris Ruggeri fourth in the 400 hurdles in 17.19 seconds. J.R. Sage was second in the 200-meter dash in 24.87 seconds. Thomson engaged in some great duels in the throwing events, beating Westhill’s Tom Fisher in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet 3 3/4 inches, but finishing second (123 feet 4 inches) to Fisher (125 feet 5 inches) in the discus.
Chris Ruggeri was third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches, as Tyler Rhinehart got fourth in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet.
Good as that was, F-M’s girls topped it by earning 156 points in Chittenango, nearly double what runner-up Sauquoit Valley (83 points) could do.
In this version of the Fleet Feet Mile, F-M swept the top three spots as Chapman won in a time of 4:57.26, with Malone second (5:03.57) and Katie Sischo third in 5:11.61.
Meghan Anklin worked her way to first place in the 3,000 in 10:55.26 as Ariotti (11:03.52) took second. Kathryn Fanning, in a time of 2:23.43, edged Carter (2:23.84) in the 800, while Heather Martin (1:01.70) and Alibrandi (1:02.28) went 1-2 in the 200.
It went further, too, as Marini tore to another victory in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.04. Molly Levy took second in the 100 (13.76 seconds) and third in the 200 (29.49 seconds), with Sophia Sorrentino in fifth place in the 200.
Martin gained a victory in the long jump, going 15 feet 4 3/4 inches, with Erika Davin third in the high jump (4 feet 8 inches) and Heidi Stevens fourth in the pentathlon.
Alibrandi, Carter, Martin and Audrey Wallace worked together to win the 4×400 relay in 4:31.19, with Malone, Fanning, Chapman and Marini together to win the distance medley relay in a clocking of 12:03.41.
