Off to a 1-3 start, the Jordan-Elbridge boys lacrosse team had to produce a spark before the Division II race got away from them.
So the Eagles delivered Tuesday afternoon on its home field, dictating the pace against Marcellus and getting just enough to beat the Mustangs 8-7.
J-E had to stay patient through a first quarter where it got shut out. However, the defense didn’t allow the deficit to get too great, and the Eagles started to find the net in the second period, closing within 4-3 by halftime.
Continuing to improve, the Eagles tied it, 6-6, by the time they reached the fourth quarter. Both sides would score once in a tense final period, but J-E’s Brian Murray notched the goal that proved to be the game-winner.
Marcellus actually had more shots in this game, but they kept ending up in the stick of Eagles goalie Connor Smart, whose 18 saves made a big difference, especially when compared with Mustang counterpart Brad Stowell, who had 10 saves.
Josh Livingston and Dylan Johnson each scored twice to lead a blanced J-E attack. Jeff Guadagnolo had a goal and two assists as Murray, Abe Patrick and Cody Lewis notched goals, too.
Marcellus, for its part, had Josh Ginestro and Will Nolan each put up two goals, with Matt McCaffer, R.J. Linder and Evan Hughes also scoring. Ken Kimpel had two assists as Steve Brissette added an assist.
