Unable to play for nearly two weeks after its March 28 season-opening loss to Bishop Ludden, the West Genesee baseball team was glad to see sunshine again. And even though it stayed rather cool for last Thursday’s game against Central Square, the Wildcats still used its hot bats to jump on the Red Hawks and earn a 6-3 victory. With the game still 0-0, WG jumped on Central Square pitcher Eric Williams for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. That turned out to be all the offense pitching ace Eric Spencer needed, as he went the full route, surrendering just four hits while striking out nine and not walking a single Red Hawks hitter. On the offensive end, Brian Burns and Greg Wadach each had two hits, with Wadach and Justin Capella each earning a pair of RBIs. Erik Krohl and Turner Parry each drove in one run. As for WG’s softball team, a week removed from its April 2 extra-inning defeat to Westhill that started the season, the Wildcats went to Central Square and easily handled the Red Hawks in an 8-2 decision. Single runs in the second and fourth innings pushed WG in front, 2-0, but the real damage came in the top of the fifth, when the Wildcats tagged Central Square pitcher Mackenzie Sherlock for four runs. Jordan Arsenault proved unstoppable at the plate, with a home run and double as part of WG’s nine-hit attack. Kailey Ritch added a triple. Ashley Amidon pitched all seven innings, giving up just four hits.
