A double-digit win streak is what the Bishop Grimes boys basketball team was seeking when it began the defense of its Section III Class B-1 title.
Sure enough, the no. 3 seed Cobras did get its 10th win in a row, delighting the hometown fans in East Syracuse with a 75-50 romp over no. 6 seed Holland Patent in last Thursday night’s B-1 quarterfinals.
That long win streak had helped Grimes join a four-way tie for the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title with Marcellus, Westhill and Hannibal, each of them with 11-3 win marks.
Of them, though, Grimes had the hottest hand going, and even Holland Patent, with all of its experience playing Class A foes in the Tri-Valley League, could not change that trend.
Running up and down the court from the opening tip, the Cobras came close to doubling HP’s output, steadily building a 42-23 advantage.
As if that wasn’t enough, a 19-11 push through the third quarter made it 61-34, and allowed Grimes to relax and rest its starters through much of the final period.
Mike Stone, with 15 points, led a deep and balanced Grimes attack. Kucjok Ater had 10 points, with Mike Sugamosto and Joe Basla each earning eight points. Steve Dillmore helped with seven points as Luke Tucci and Tavon Moore got six points apiece.
With this win, Grimes improved to 17-4 on the season.
