With an impressive effort, the Chittenango boys indoor track and field team rose to third place during last Tuesday night’s Section III Class A championship meet at Manley Field House.
All told, the Bears picked up 76 points, not far from the 85 points posted by runner-up New Hartford. Jamesville-DeWitt won with 106 points.
Brian Bohne nearly won the 55-meter dash, as he and Fowler’s Zafir Thompkins both hit the line in 6.93 seconds, but Thompkins timed a bit quicker, so Bohne finished second.
In the 300-meter dash, Bohne was third in 38.29 seconds, and in the 4×200 relay Bohne, Phil Anson, Phil Pollock and Dan Scavone finished second in 1:40.05 as Phoenix won in 1:37.80.
Josiah Durfee got second place in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:16.53, and was also fifth (4:51.73) in the mile as John Durfee took fifth in the 3,200.
Both of the Durfees, plus Eric Murray and Dima Tarasevich, combined for third in the 4×800 relay (9:08.11). In the 4×400, Tarasevich, Scavone, Pollock and Murray were fourth in 3:48.66. Kohei Matsuta was sixth in the 600-meter run in 1:35.86.
Bruce Gondeck earned third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.59 seconds, got third in the high jump (5 feet 10 inches) and had a fourth-place triple jump of 39 feet 3 inches. John Laplante and Pat Gardner each cleared 9 feet 6 inches in the pole vault, tying for second. Scavone had a sixth-place long jump of 17 feet 4 1/2 inches.
Going first at Manley, the Chittenango girls team picked up 25 points last Monday night, finishing seventh in a 10-team field where, just like in the boys meet, J-D (142 points) took the top spot.
On the track, Kristina Gorden got to third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.19 seconds. She also teamed with Jessica Stoddard, Christine Stoddard and Theresa Parascendola for fourth place in the 4×200 relay (2:01.74) as the Bears were also sixth (11:21.86) in the 4×800. Christine Stoddard got to sixth place in the 300-meter dash in 45.02 seconds.
Jordan Donelly was fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 12:18.99, as Kelly Anderson got sixth (3:30.54) in the 1,000-meter run and Hannah Murphy was sixth (5:27.94) in the 1,500.
Katrina Karbouniczak cleared 4 feet 10 inches to finish second in the high jump, as Maize Zamlowski took sixth in the triple jump by going 29 feet 5 1/2 inches.
