M-E wrestlers win Center State title

In a fitting cap to its regular-season work, the Morrisville-Eaton wrestling team went out to Little Falls Saturday and earned the Center State Conference team championship.

With a total of 202 points, the Warriors edged out Adirondack, who was second with 189 points. Sherburne-Earlville took third place with 154 points.

Five M-E wrestlers made it to championship matches, and four of them won, including reigning state champion Ryan LeBlanc, who took the 171-pound title by pinning Mike Barse (Mohawk) late in the second period.

Each of the other winners needed the full six minutes, though. Cody Frost fought his way to the 140-pound final, then took it right to Adirondack’s Matt O’Rourke in an 8-2 decision.

Alex Meyers emerged as the 189-pound champion, fighting past John Carver (Canastota) 4-1, and Dalton Villnave won in the 215-pound division when he claimed a 3-1 decision over Mohawk’s Mike Judson. Only Shane Strong, at 285 pounds, lost a final, but he took defending sectional champion Chris Pike (Sherburne-Earlville) to the wire in a 1-0 defeat.

The Warriors now get ready to go to South Jefferson High School in Adams for this Saturday’s Section III Class B championship meet, which starts at 10 a.m. The top finishers advance to the Feb. 21 overall sectional Division II meet at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
