On the brink of recording an undefeated regular season, the Hamilton girls basketball team kept finding new ways to celebrate.
The theme for the Emerald Knights during Friday night’s 47-31 victory over West Canada Valley was a personal milestone on the part of senior Kylie Martin.
Often the leading scorer for the state’s no. 3-ranked Class D team, Martin again would set the pace on this night with 21 points.
By doing so, Martin surpassed 1,000 career points, the third player in school history to reach that mark. Katie Murphy and Liz Unger were the first two.
With all this as a backdrop, Hamilton had some early struggles with West Canada Valley, only leading the Indians 7-6 after one period and unable to draw clear in either of the next two quarters as WCV hung tough.
Only in the final period did the Emerald Knights get clear, outscoring the Indians 22-9 as Martin got some help from Jordan Peterson, who finished with 13 points. Calyn Fisher (six points) and Katie Weeks (five points) contributed, too.
Having won 17 in a row, Hamilton plays neighbor Morrisville-Eaton this week and will find out Sunday who it faces for the start of the Section III Class D playoffs.
