With most of the points fought for, the West Genesee wrestling team managed to double up Central Square’s total last Wednesday night at Paul V. Moore High School, beating the Red Hawks by a 34-17 margin.
Of the 13 matches, the Wildcats won nine, but only got two of them through pins. Dillon Goldman, at 189 pounds, took 1:35 to finish off Clay Deacons, while Mike Young (135 pounds) earned his pin over Avery Sigle at the end of the second period.
Connor Grome had an impressive 112-pound showing as he shut out Alex Potts 8-0, with Sean Clary (140 pounds) blanking Nick Guerin 6-0.
Ian Coolican, in one of the many close matches at 103 pounds, beat Brandon Engebresten 8-4, just as Jon Fetterolf (125 pounds) claimed an 8-5 decision over Ryan Hayes.
Erik Krohl worked his way to a 6-3 win over Derrick Brooks at 140 pounds, with Heitham Wady (160 pounds) holding off Matt McChesney 3-1 and Nick Marco (171 pounds) earning a 4-1 victory over Josh Vredenburg.
WG nearly got other points, too, as Jason Fitch (130 pounds) battled through his 7-5 loss to Ron Burghardt and Evan Stefano (152 pounds) did the same in an 11-8 loss to Chance Scott.
The Wildcats and Baldwinsville would settle the CNY Counties League National division regular-season title Tuesday night before a Wednesday trip to Rome Free Academy and Saturday’s Section III Class AA meet at Cicero-North Syracuse.
