Right down to the last match, the Fayetteville-Manlius wrestling team had a chance to upend the Liverpool Warriors in last Thursday night’s meet. However, Liverpool came out on top, 36-34, on the same night that neighbor East Syracuse-Minoa dropped its own two-point decision to Marcellus 38-36. F-M erased an early 6-0 deficit against Liverpool with four straight wins, which commenced when Brandon Longden claimed a forfeit at 135 pounds. Ryan Kiggins, at 140 pounds, pinned Mende Cukalevski 25 seconds into the third period, while Ian Byrnes (145 pounds) finished off Justin Rose in 1:45 and Mike Mannion (152 pounds) earned his pin over Matt Hathaway in 2:38. Liverpool roared back by taking the next four matches — two through decisions, one pin and one injury default. Only Tom Quinlan (103 pound) broke the string for the Hornets, beating Casey Guilfoil 11-1. When Josh Scalzetti, at 119 pounds, pinned Dom Lizzo in 2:30, F-M had a 34-33 lead, so the whole meet hinged on the 125-pound duel between Connor Wingate and Liverpool’s Justin Thompson. For six exciting minutes, Wingate and Thompson dueled, and ended up at 8-8, requiring overtime. With a single escape, Thompson prevailed 9-8, and Liverpool had the meet win. ESM’s dilemma against Marcellus was that it won more contests, but had to forfeit five matches and 30 points to the Mustangs. Of course, Andrew VanRiper (160 pounds) and Dustin Moss (171 pounds) got forfeits, too, though four other ESM wrestlers won with pins. Matt Letcher took just 1:25 to pin his 135-pound foe, Andrew Eberle, while Mike Dee (145 pounds) got his pin over Jeff Hardy in 1:37. Brenden O’Donnell won at 125 pounds by pinning Matt Marcheterre in 3:01 as Zach Revette (152 pounds) pinned Anthony Lapczynski in 2:26.
