Here, in front of the Marcellus boys basketball team, stood two obstacles in the way of a perfect season, either of which could leave a blemish. And while much attention will be given to the Mustangs’ showdown with Hannibal in Saturday’s Coaches vs. Cancer event at LeMoyne College, Marcellus did not look ahead, given that its neighbor and rival was first on the agenda. And when Marcellus visited Skaneateles Wednesday night, it ignored the physical nature of the Lakers and simply used its defense as the foundation for a 59-42 victory. As far as the lineup goes, Joe Cornish has taken over the starting spot once held by the injured Will Fiacchi — and as with so many great teams, the lack of a single star has not affected its performance one bit. Marcellus held Skaneateles to just six points in the first quarter and went out in front. The Lakers also proved stingy for a while, only trailing 21-18 at halftime, but a third-quarter outburst allowed the Mustangs to draw clear. Joe Cornish, in particular, stood out on the offensive side, staring in Fiacchi’s place and setting a new season mark with 13 points, part of a well-balanced approach. Scott Cotter led with 14 points, with Will Nolan matching Cornish’s total of 13 points. Dan Heil (eight points) and Zach Barbaro (six points) were close behind. Skaneateles, meanwhile, never could get any of its key players on a roll, as only Nick Pesarchick, with 12 points, moved into double figures. Kevin Rice added eight points. As the Mustangs await Hannibal, the Lakers go to Westhill Friday night.
