Before resuming the Division II West title chase, the Skaneateles ice hockey team staged its own tournament at Allyn Arena last weekend with three state-ranked opponents — Williamsville South, Canandaigua and Rochester McQuaid — all in the field.
As it turned out, the visitors had all the fun, including Williamsville South, as the Billies beat Skaneateles 3-0 in last Friday’s opening round.
A pair of second-period goals broke the stalemate. Trevor Diamond would finish with 15 saves, but allow South’s Leo Schultz, Mike Anders and Trevor Clark to earn one goal apiece.
McQuaid beat Canandaigua in the other half of the opening round, leaving the Lakers to face the Braves in Saturday’s consolation game, where it lost again in yet another 4-3 overtime game.
In this instance, Skaneateles trailed, 2-0, when Dylan VanHoltz scored twice in the second period to catch up. The Lakers and Braves traded goals in the third period, with VanHoltz converting again for a hat trick, but Canandaigua still prevailed. McQuaid beat Williamsville South 1-0 in the championship game.
Even with all this, Skaneateles could reclaim a share of first place in Division II West if it beats Corcoran Wednesday night at Meachem Rink. The Lakers are back home Friday to meet Sweet Home, from the Section VI ranks.
