Skaneateles girls get first win over Williamson

At last, the Skaneateles girls basketball team could enjoy a victory, getting one just before the clock ran out on 2008.

Mired in a six-game skid, the Lakers found itself going to overtime against Williamson in last Tuesday’s consolation game of the Wayne Tournament, but found a way to squeeze out a 51-49 victory.

Unlike so many other times this season, Skaneateles kept up with the opposition, matching baskets with Williamson throughout regulation.

Trailing 31-29 after three periods, the Lakers caught up, tying the game 43-43 to force the overtime, then outscored Williamson 8-6 in those extra four minutes.

Holly Ross worked in the paint to earn a career-best 19 points. Jackie Leslie finished with 11 points, while Ashley Sheldon gained 10 points. Emily Call and Jordan Dudden each had five points.

A day earlier, the Lakers lost to Marion 55-21, shut out in the second quarter as Marion got away. Jordan Dudden would finish with eight points.

Skaneateles goes for two in a row Tuesday night against Homer before visiting Bishop Ludden next Thursday.
