Staying red-hot, the Hamilton girls basketball team pushed its season-opening win streak to seven in its usual overwhelming manner — something that even a snowstorm couldn’t prevent from happening.
First, the Emerald Knights smothered Westmoreland for large portions of last Tuesday night’s 63-33 victory over the Bulldogs.
Hamilton applied lots of pressure on one end, then converted baskets on the other, as it roared out to a 35-12 halftime lead, eventually building the margin to 52-22 before clearing the bench late.
Kylie Martin continued to excel, putting in 17 points, while Jess Brawn hit on a pair of 3-pointers on her way to career-best 15 points. Calyn Fisher and Jordan Peterson each got eight points, while Calyn Fisher earned six points and Katie Weeks five points.
Then came Friday’s snowstorm, which pushed back a trip to West Canada Valley until Saturday afternoon.
All that did, though, was delay the Emerald Knights (no. 11 in the first state Class D rankings of the season) from another winning effort, as it flattened the Indians 52-19.
Remarkably, Hamilton reeled off 23 unanswered points during a first-quarter shutout. As if that wasn’t enough, the Emerald Knights blanked WCV again in the third period, the margin growing to 43-7 before the starters rested.
Brawn continued to step up, earning 13 points, as Martin finished with 12 points. Sara Whyatt earned nine points and Peterson got six points.
Before a well-deserved winter break, Hamilton will play again Tuesday, at Westmoreland, in hot pursuit of an eighth consecutive win.
