Just as they renewed acquaintances on Monday night, the Skaneateles and Marcellus girls volleyball team found themselves further apart, due to events from the previous week. The Lakers were sweeping Solvay last Tuesday night, just as the Mustangs’ comeback attempt against Cazenovia fell short in a five-game defeat. Marcellus, who beat Cazenovia in last year’s Section III Class B-1 final, did not play well in the first two games, resulting in 25-12 and 25-13 defeats. Somehow, the Mustangs rebounded and controlled the third game, 25-15, and fended off several match points to win the fourth game 27-25. All that did, though, was lead to a fifth game where Cazenovia rolled to a 25-10 win. Samantha Vulcano earned 25 assists. Out front, Kim Duck stepped up with eight kills and five blocks, while Jenna Sniffen earned nine kills and Kassie Phillips had seven blocks. Rebecca Eddy added five kills. Cazenovia’s Alissa Easterly had 24 assists, often feeding it to Julie Gregg (12 kills) and Leah McAleer (10 kills) for results. As this was going on, Skaneateles was sweeping Solvay 25-10, 25-13, 25-18. Chloe Warner had 15 assists as Ryan Merle mixed up six kills with six aces. Katherine Hill provided seven kills, with Alexa Campanile earning five kills and four aces.
