The village of Camillus board passed three local laws last week during the regular board meeting, including a 180-day moratorium on zoning amendments, site plans and building permits that had been passed by the village board in April 2007 but never filed with the New York Secretary of State.
The moratorium would prohibit “the filing, acceptance and/or approval of any and all applications for Zoning Amendments,” along with changes in use or occupancy of properties within commercial or industrial zoning districts while the village undergoes a rezoning to align with the Comprehensive Plan.
The moratorium would also apply to applications already being reviewed for zoning changes, and may be extended once for an additional 180 days.
The board also passed a rental registration and inspection law, establishing a uniform registration of rental properties within the village and the authority of all rental properties to be inspected by village codes enforcement officials for hazards. Similar laws have been adopted this year in Solvay and East Syracuse.
Cutlery building up for grabs
On Wednesday Nov. 19, the village held a public meeting with Pyramid Brokerage Company to discuss the future of the Camillus Cutlery building on Main Street.
Deputy Mayor Kurt Brunger said there was a lot of great knowledge shared during the meeting, which drew several community members to village hall, including Camillus Cutlery historian Tom Williams.
“The owner of the place is looking for a developer to develop it, they’re eager to sell it, but at the same time they’re not just looking for anyone to take it on,” Brunger said. “They want to make sure that it fits into the scape of the village and what the village wants to do.”
Brunger said the meeting was “extremely positive.”
Village attorney Steve Primo suggested the addition of the former Masonic Lodge to the property would be a cornerstone to drive the entire development. The building, which currently houses Camillus Kayaks and Camillus Stained Glass, is located on the corner of Newport Road and East Genesee Street.
The Camillus Village Board will meet next at 7 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 9 at the village hall.
