Mere days after practices began, both of Cicero-North Syracuse’s boys golf teams found themselves on the course at Northern Pines, beginning the entire Section III 2008-09 athletic calendar.
As in years past, the Northstars split up into two teams — one labeled Blue, the other Green — with both of them contesting home matches at Northern Pines, a course in Cicero on Route 31 east of CNS High School.
Opening together, Blue and Green faced Utica Proctor on a sunny Thursday afternoon at Valley View Golf Course in Utica — with Blue prevailing by just two shots, 223 to Green’s 225 and the Raiders shooting 231.
Brad Monroe led CNS Blue with a nine-hole total of 41, with John Stimson close behind as he shot 42. Those front-line scores made a difference, as CNS Green teammates Rob LaVeck and Dan Sciarrino each shooting 43 to lead their side. Proctor’s Nick Calenzo had a 44.
For the home opener at Northern Pines on Monday, both CNS teams were again together, this time to face Rome Free Academy.
Again, Blue came out on top, shooting 194 to the Black Knights’ 209 and Green’s total of 226, showing a lot of consistency at the top of its lineup.
Monroe this time shot a 38, while Stimson, Craig Kawecki and Mitch Piper each put up rounds of 39. Also, Josh Iorizzo had a 40, with Rich Hill and Damin George shooting 41 apiece.
Sciarrino led CNS Green with a 44 as Rob LaVeck, Erik Burrows and Nick Naylor matched each other with rounds of 45. Bradon Collins shot a 48.
The teams stay together to play Fayetteville-Manlius Wednesday at Woodcrest before joining several other Section III squads at the Ravenwood Invitational in Victor, east of Rochester.
