Dave’s Doughnuts aids charities
Stearns & Wheler, through a unique Friday-morning program called Dave’s Doughnuts, raised over $1,300 for local charities this past holiday season.
Started in 1998 by employee Dave Kerr, employees make a contribution, usually a dollar, for every doughnut (or muffin, or cookie) purchased from the several dozen brought in every Friday morning by one of a group of volunteers. Part of the price pays for the cost of the donuts; the balance goes into a fund that, at the end of the year, is divided among local charities. In past years contributions have also gone to the American Red Cross and Hurricane Katrina relief.
In 2007, Dave’s Doughnuts donated $500 to the CazCares Food Pantry, $350 to the Madison County Office for the Aging “Meals on Wheels” program, and $350 to Wanderer’s Rest. In addition, 10 gifts for the Stearns & Wheler Giving Tree were also purchased with the funds. The Giving Tree is a separate charitable effort initiated by CazCares whereby employees donate holiday gifts and/or gift cards to needy families in the area.
