When Cicero-North Syracuse’s Andy Kahl attempted to clear 7 feet in the high jump during last Wednesday night’s Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational at Manley Field House, he was unable to do so.
However, that was about the only thing that went wrong for Kahl. Just by clearing 6 feet 11 1/4 inches, he set a new Section III record, offering the biggest individual highlight of the entire evening. Kahl was so dominant in the event that no one else in the field even cleared 6 feet.
Kahl’s work (he was also sixth in the long jump) helped the Northstars hold off Henninger and take the boys championship, repeating their work from two earlier contests at Manley earlier this month.
CNS finished with 68 points, just ahead of the Black Knights, who got second with 66 points mostly by winning four individual titles.
The Northstars countered with a bit more depth. In the 55-meter hurdles, Ty Howington, in a time of 8.27 seconds, held off Matt Weeks (Marcellus), who was second in 8.35 seconds. Howington’s teammate, Keenan Williams, got fourth place in 8.78 seconds.
And in the lone relay race of the night, the 4×400, Shaun Hyde, Tony Rogers, Jeff Azzoto and Brandon Marlow combined for a time of 3:33.15 that beat runner-up Baldwinsville by 2.47 seconds.
Craig Barber, by clearing 13 feet in the pole vault, tied Tully’s Kenny Bucaro for first place, only to see Bucaro get the full 10 points because he had fewer misses.
Nathan MacNabb ran to third place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:35.53, while Jake Whritenour needed 1:28.50 to earn third in the 600-meter run. Vincent St. James got third in the 55-meter dash in 6.78 seconds, as Richie Lickfield needed a shot put toss of 46 feet 9 inches for yet another third-place showing.
CNS also had a strong outing on the girls side, earning 42 points to take third place behind Liverpool (78 points) and Fayetteville-Manlius (54 points).
Monique Roberts again claimed the long jump, clearing 5 feet 2 inches as teammate Gina Campagna earned third place, clearing 5 feet.
Jasmine Thompson earned second place in the 55-meter hurdles (8.92 seconds) as Campagna (9.47 seconds) finished fourth. Thompson moved on to a fifth in the high jump (15 feet 5 1/4 inches) as Kristina Cloinger threw the shot put exactly 30 feet for third place.
Lauren Spink got sixth place (3:12.56) in the 1,000-meter run. McKaye Neumeister, Brittany Capsello, Leigha DeStefano and Katie Kennedy got a time of 4:20.79 and claimed fourth place in the 4×400 relay.
