By virtue of a four-game sweep through league foes last week, the Jamesville-DeWitt baseball team finds itself atop the OHSL Freedom division standings.
Showing its offense early, the Red Rams led all the way through last Monday’s 5-3 victory over the Mexico Tigers.
J-D jumped on Mexico pitcher Justin Buckley for three runs in the top of the first inning. The Tigers would inch back within one, but the Rams used single runs in the third and fourth innings to stay in front.
Three pitchers — Sam Sherman, Mike Gianni and Kevin Brown — combined to allow just five hits, with Gianni earning the win and Brown claiming the save.
Mark Kuhn went deep for a solo home run as he, Brown, Mike Canfield and Ed Hughes each earned one RBI. The Tigers’ Kody O’Connor drove in two runs.
That good play continued Wednesday, against Fulton, where a big sixth inning helped rally the Red Rams past the Red Raiders 11-6.
Fulton enjoyed a 4-0 lead through two innings, but J-D ate into it and tied the game, 5-5, by the end of the fifth inning.
After the Raiders scored once in the top of the sixth, the Rams turned loose. It batted around and produced six runs, helping to give Andrew Hughes the win, in relief of Kaufman.
Kuhn and Sam Lebowitz both smacked home runs, as Kuhn led the way with three RBIs. Lebowitz and Canfield drove in two runs apiece, as Brown, Ed Hughes and Andrew Hughes were credited with single RBIs.
In the closest game of this run, J-D had to withstand a late rally from Cortland last Friday to beat the Purple Tigers 8-7.
Down 4-0 early, the Rams went in front with six runs in the bottom of the third, eventually building an 8-4 lead.
Cortland ate away at it, with a run in the fifth inning and two more in the top of the seventh, but Gianni got the last out as he won in a long relief stint after replacing Sherman.
Brown hit a home run as he, Kaufman and Kuhn drove in two runs apiece. Ed Hughes and Andrew Hughes added single RBis.
J-D then tore into Fulton on Saturday afternoon, saving its best work for the end of its 15-2 victory over the Red Raiders.
Through five innings, the Rams enjoyed modest 4-2 lead, but it scored twice in the sixth inning for some breathing space, then tore up Fulton for nine runs in the top of the seventh to turn the game into a rout.
Brown, who threw a complete-game three-hitter, also sparkled at the plate, with three doubles and five RBIs to pace an 18-hit attack. Lebowitz drove in three runs, while Dan Picuicco earned two RBIs. Gianni, Canfield, Kuhn and Ed Hughes also drove in runs.
On the road this week, J-D takes on Phoenix and Chittenango, knowing that the league regular-season title could hinge on games with CBA and East Syracuse-Minoa in the final week of the regular season.
