As the full measure of itself, the Marcellus boys lacrosse team tried to defend its new home turf against the defending Section III Class C champions.
But the pace that unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy set was just too intense for the Mustangs to handle, leading to a 19-9 defeat last Wednesday night.
When it did attack, Marcellus found plenty of vulnerability in CBA’s defense, but it didn’t get there often enough to make a difference.
Instead, the Mustangs were often fending off the Brothers’ waves of offense. CBA built a 4-2 edge through one quarter, then scored 12 times over the next two periods, leaving Marcellus behind in the process.
Sean Connors, Kevin Merriman and Josh Ginestro each scored twice in the Mustangs’ effort. Tyler Mosher, Mike McSweeney and Chris Shand had the other goals, with Jeff Watson gaining three assists.
Between them, goalies Marcus Giarusso and Marshall Merritt had just 10 saves. For the Brothers, Jack Harmatuk had four goals and one assist, while Craig Lange gained three goals and three assists.
On Friday, Marcellus visits Tully, a team enjoying a spectacular week thanks to one-goal wins over LaFayette and Cazenovia, the latter in double overtime.
