Everyone on the Westhill girls lacrosse team that’s still around from 2006 remembers that Christian Brothers Academy ended the Warriors’ run in last year’s Section III Class C semifinal.
Thus, the Warriors found a lot of satisfaction, and a bit of payback, last Wednesday when it went to Alibrandi Stadium and beat the Brothers 16-10.
Westhill had paid close attention when, on April 20, CBA allowed 19 goals in a loss to Shaker. That, plus past knowledge of what the Brothers would do, made the Warriors confident it could make the same kind of statement.
Sure enough, Westhill seized control by the time the first half was done, grabbing a 9-5 lead. From that point on, it became a chase, one the Warriors won because it had enough firepower to match whatever CBA could produce.
Lizzy Coholan led the way with four goals and two assists, but she was far from the only threat.
Katie Doherty earned her own three-goal hat trick, while Laura Zimmerman, Bridget Dwyer, Mackenzie Rainone and Samantha Marshall each found the net twice. Lisa Olszewski had the other goal as Anna Hutchings, Carolyn Clark, Liz Riley and Claire Purcell all came up with assists.
Morgan Roach played in the net and recorded 11 saves, as the Warriors’ defense made sure that no CBA players, other than M.E. Lapham (four goals) or Brittany Brigandi (three goals, two assists) caused any major damage.
A day earlier, the Warriors drew an easy assignment and tore into Onondaga, beating the Tigers by a score of 17-1.
Zimmerman, with four assists to go with her pair of goals, led a Westhill attack that steadily built a 10-1 halftime edge and shut out OCS the rest of the way by keeping the ball in the Tigers’ end.
Coholan had the lone three-goal hat trick. Rainone, Doherty and Samantha Marshall joined Zimmerman in the two-goal column, as Clark, Dwyer, Kristen Diglio, Olszewski, Claire Purcell and Colleen Lowery all registered single goals.
