In January 2004, the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team took a loss to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, an event that did not hold massive significance at the time.

Nearly three years later, that game had remained the last time the Cobras had ever tasted defeat in the OHSL Patriot division.

But that 47-game streak finally ended last Tuesday night, in a fast-paced game at Weedsport where the Warriors subdued Grimes 67-51.

Unlike some close calls earlier in the month, Grimes could not rally this time. Weedsport jumped out to a 10-2 edge, then maintained the margin for the rest of the first half and sent the Cobras to the break looking at a 33-25 deficit.

Weedsport settled matters in the third quarter, stretching the margin to as much as 20, as it put four players in double figures. Katlin Hammersley had 19 points, while Allie Beardsley had 14 points, Markie Kreplin 11 points and Jesse Hoffman 10 points.

Meanwhle, Erin Lowe did what she could to keep the Cobras within sight, setting a new career mark with 23 points. Paige Orr cooled off a bit, to eight points, while Cady Kalemba and Brooke Bonacci each had six points.

So ended a four-game road swing for the Cobras, who finally get to go home Thursday night when it faces Cato-Meridian.
