Having one extra pin — or one extra point – proved to be an immense benefit for the Baldwinsville wrestling team.
In last Wednesday night’s tight battle at Fowler, the Bees had five pins to the Falcons’ four, and a single-point decision proved to be pivotal as B’ville prevailed, 37-33.
When all the scoring was settled, it was clear that the 152-pound match between B’ville’s Andrew Giormini and Fowler’s Josh Hayden was a decisive factor.
For six minutes, Giormini and Hayden closely dueled, the matter not decided until the final seconds. By having a little more willpower, Giormini prevailed, 7-6, giving the Bees three crucial points that, in a meet decided by four points, was enormous.
In another exciting match, at 103 pounds, Anthony Finnochiaro took Mike Miranda to overtime, only to get beat by a fall.
Otherwise, this meet featured a lot of regulation pins. Corey Buyck helped the Bees when, at 160 pounds, he took just 24 seconds to pin Quindell Palmer.
Also in first-period matches, Tyler Basden (171 pounds) follwed Buyck by finishing off Rakeem Bryant in 1:38, and Mike Baldino (119 pounds) got his pin over Zach Merwin in 1:52.
Sean Hennigan (145 pounds) gained his pin over Fowler’s Daryl Becker with 36 seconds left, and Joe Semf (130 pounds) also took it to the wire before pinning Lamont Fleming with 18 seconds to go.
Keith Dement, competing at 125 pounds, had the only other regulation decision aside from Giormini, handling Corey Coleman in a 13-4 romp.
