So now we find out that the Liverpool girls soccer team cares little about anyone trying to snatch away its status as Class AA championship favorites.
Upstart Auburn believed it could do such a thing, but the Warriors went west on Thursday and shot down that notion in a big way, succeeding in every phase of the game to beat the host Maroons, 3-0.
This was a clash of the teams with the best two records in the Class AA ranks. Liverpool was 12-1, which wasn’t a surprise, but Auburn had shocked people with its 11-1 start, its lone blemish a loss to Baldwinsville on Sept. 13.
Blessed with a ferocious attack, the Maroons would get its share of chances against the vaunted Warrior defense.
Each time, Liverpool prevailed, as Kaitlyn Flynn, Amanda Pollock, Alicia Vollmer and Emily McElroy neutralized Auburn’s speed and skill, and Ashleigh Bowers stopped all six shots she faced.
To win, the Warriors got a single tally in the first half and two more in the second half. Freshman Gabby Racines again displayed her prowess with her 11th goal of the season, while Christina Ippolito and Jordan Miller also put shots in the net. Danielle Gannon and Jill Benoit were credited with assists.
Liverpool is now in the driver’s seat to get the top seed for the Section III Class AA playoffs, which are just three weeks away.
