To cap off a perfect run through September, the Cazenovia girls field hockey team needed to get through three more tests.

This started last Monday, at home, when the Lakers overcame a sluggish start to beat the Hamilton Emerald Knights by a 3-0 margin.

Neither team could score in the first half, but Cazenovia’s relentless pressure paid off in the second half, when its stars all contributed to a three-goal outburst.

Katy Vogl, Brittany Furlong and Jaimie Purdy all took turns scoring, with Furlong adding an assist. Hamilton goalie Ashley Britton prevented further damage by recording 10 saves.

Still at home on Wednesday afternoon, Cazenovia moved its win streak to nine with a big first half in the midst of a 4-2 victory over the Watertown Cyclones.

In stark contrast to its effort against Hamilton, the Lakers pounded Watertown from the start, getting all four of its goals in the first half.

Mostly, Vogl was unstoppable, finding the net twice and adding an assist. Maggie Dougherty and Lindsey Smith both chipped in goals, too, while Furlong and Lauren Colligan also earned assists.

Margaux Hoagland and Maggie Moore split time in goal, combining for six saves. Katie Morrison and Rachel Fazio had Watertown’s goals.

Going to Auburn on Friday afternoon, the Lakers repeated its Auburn feat, blasting its way past the Maroons in a 3-0 shutout.

Furlong, Vogl and Rebecca DeMario all took turns putting in goals, and the Lakers’ defense, led by Breanna Smith and Kate Webber, limited Auburn to just three shots, allowing much of the game to flow in the Maroons’ end.

On Monday, Cazenovia got an even bigger test when it visited long-time Class A power Liverpool, a chance to play on artificial turf before the playoffs. This is the first of four games in six days for the Lakers, who also play Homer, Cato-Meridian and Oneida before the week is done.
