Tearing through the easiest part of its schedule, the Baldwinsville girls soccer team’s win streak reached eight early last week before the team took a well-deserved six-day break between games.
That break would be needed. Monday night’s game against West Genesee commenced a stretch where, in nine days, the Bees would play WG, Fayetteville-Manlius, Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse.
Judging by the initial chapters, B’ville was quite ready for it.
Having lost, 4-1, to West Genesee on Sept. 2, the Bees wanted payback — and got it in a big way, riding sophomore Quincy Spagnoletti’s spectacular first-half hat trick to a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
Granted, this was not the same West Genesee team, as it was missing three starters due to injury, including goalie Melissa Stevens, who hurt her shoulder in the Wildcats’ 1-0 upset of previously unbeaten Liverpool two days earlier.
That all-out effort left the Wildcats a bit tired — and B’ville exploited it right away, unleashing its fastest and most dangerous player, Spagnoletti, upon WG’s defense.
Just 5:59 into the game, Spagnoletti got a step and charged down the left side and fired a quick shot that eluded Stevens’ replacement, Colleen Finney, and found the net to put the Bees up 1-0.
This aggression continued in the 27th minute. This time, Spagnoletti got open on the right, Finney came out to meet her — and the sophomore coolly poked the ball past her for a second goal.
In the 37th minute, Spagnoletti completed her hat trick with style, finding space on the right and, from 25 yards out, crushing a shot past Finney.
WG, lethargic in the first half, had a lot more energy in the late going, but senior defenders Leora Kenney, Nerissa Barzee, Meghan Merriam and Emily Maguire kept the ball from the net, and Katie VanDeValk would tack on a late goal.
And Spagnoletti was not done. In Wednesday’s game against F-M at Swan Pond, she scored midway through the second half to help the Bees beat the Hornets, 1-0. It was B’ville’s 10th straight win, all shutouts.
Prior to its break, the Bees again utilized its home-field advantage well last Tuesday night, beating the Corcoran Cougars 6-0.
Much of the damage was inflicted in the first half, when B’ville raced out to a 5-0 advantage before head coach Kathy Morse cleared her bench.
Kenney was the only B’ville player to score twice. Four others — Ali Nagle, Merriam, Casey Chiesa and VanDevalk — had single tallies. Katie Gildemeyer added an assist.
