ONONDAGA COUNTY – After five consecutive defeats, the Baldwinsville girls swim team finally gathered enough points to break into the win column as a collective unit.
When the Bees defeated Auburn 45-33 Tuesday night, it had the quickest times in all three relays along with Ashley Konz finishing first in two individual events.
Konz went two minutes, 10.76 seconds to take the 200-yard freestyle as Mercedez Walker was second in 2:32.19. Then, in the 100 butterfly, Konz finished in 1:17.30.
Eva Smith prevailed, too, going 26.30 seconds in the 50 freestyle to pull away from Madeline Sauro (29.57) before a 100 freestyle where her 57.14 seconds was just behind the 56.64 from the Maroons’ Maura Moochler.
Gruppe posted the fastest 200 individual medley time of 2:53.48 as Jenna Luke took the 500 freestyle in 6:38.25. Makenna Williams beat the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:32.63 as Sauro was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:11.85 to Moochler’s 1:06.22.
To start the meet, Smith, Konz, Gruppe and Sauro went 2:11.73 in the 200 medley relay. Walker, Campbell Boslet, Eden Luke and Henna Luke won the 200 freestyle relay in 2:11.53 before the earlier quartet returned in the 400 freestyle relay to post 4:20.45.
At Skaneateles two nights later, the Bees lost 101-70 to the Lakers, but still had Smith stand out as she claimed the 100 backstroke in 1:00.87, beating out Konz, who was third in 1:03.03.
Earlier, in the 50 freestyle, Konz, in 26.59 seconds, was runner-up to the 25.76 from Skaneateles’ Ashley Drotar. Pairing up in the 200 freestyle relay, Konz, Gruppe, Sauro and Smith went 2:07.88 to the Lakers’ 2:01.06.
To lead Skaneateles, Hana Spaulding tore to times of 1:56.21 in the 200 freestyle and 52.94 seconds in the 100 freestyle, among the quickest in Section III this season.
At home all through next week, B’ville welcomes Christian Brothers Academy on Tuesday and Jamesville-DeWitt on Thursday night.
