Though they both would go into the Section III playoffs, the Hamilton and Morrisville-Eaton boys soccer teams would meet wildly different fates.
For the Emerald Knights, the no. 4 seed in the Class D bracket, the work began with a dominant effort against no. 13 seed Richfield Springs as it beat the Indians 8-0.
Then it was on to the Class D quarterfinals, where the Emerald Knights would need to rally to beat no. 5 seed Remsen, 2-1, in overtime.
Starting slowly, Hamilton watched as the Rams controlled most of the first-half tempo, then finally went ahead when, in the 36th minute, Steven Wilczek poked one past Kyle Mason into the net.
Facing its first deficit of the playoffs, the Emerald Knights kept cool, then staged its own domination early in the second half, keeping it in Remsen’s end to increase the heat.
In the 62nd minute, that work paid off. Matt Broedel shot from an odd angle, then watched the ball slip past Remsen keeper Frankie Carino’s hands into the net, tying the contest.
So it remained until overtime, which is a sudden-death format. Just 6:32 into the period, Nathan Broedel took a pass in the middle and, from 20 yards out, put a left-footed shot past Carino into the right side of the net.
This advanced Hamilton into the Class D semifinal against no. 1 seed LaFargeville, with the winner to get Poland or McGraw in the title game this weekend.
